More than a Retreat: The little things that make Sashwa unique

When you think of Sashwa, you might think of our yoga deck overlooking the Olifants River, delicious plant-based cuisine, or slow safaris in the Greater Kruger. But, did you know there’s even more to discover? In this month’s journal, we shine a light on the quiet corners and thoughtful spaces that don’t always take centre stage, but add a unique depth to your experience here.

A Bath Beneath the Stars

Tucked away on a small hill above the lodge, our star bath is perhaps one of Sashwa’s most surprising features. Imagine slipping into warm water infused with essential oils, a glass of bubbly in hand, while the Milky Way stretches out above you. As you soak in the revitalising aromas, the bush gently stirs to life: a splash of hippos leaving the river, the haunting call of a hyena, or the rhythmic hoot of a tiny Scops owl waking from its slumber. It’s indulgent, yes – but also grounding. A reminder that we are small beneath the vast African sky, yet deeply connected to it all.

The Waterhole Hide

Not every safari moment happens from a vehicle. Have you ever wished you could linger at a waterhole all day to see who might appear? At our newly built hide, you can. Here, patient encounters reveal themselves: elephants quenching their thirst, baboons causing mischief, or a kingfisher diving with laser precision. It’s a haven for photographers to practise their craft, or for nature lovers who want to simply be part of the stillness, watching life’s rhythm move at its own pace.

Creativity in the Wild

Our art studio is a space where imagination and nature meet. Guests are invited to sketch, paint, or simply play with colour, using the sights and sounds around them as inspiration. Stocked with a range of high-quality art materials, creativity here isn’t about perfection – it’s about expression. Study the delicate shapes of a bushwillow pod. Marvel at the endless hues of gold and green in the afternoon light. Dive into the intricate details of an elephant’s wrinkled skin. For many, art is a kind of meditation, another way to connect with nature – and with yourself.

Wellness Beyond the Mat

Yoga may be a cornerstone of our retreats, but wellbeing at Sashwa stretches further than the mat. For those looking to stimulate their bodies as well as their minds between safaris, guests can work up a sweat in the gym, ease into the heat of the sauna, or indulge in a soothing massage as the sound of birdsong drifts through the air. Each of these spaces is designed not as a “facility,” but as another pathway to restoration. Ways to let the body recalibrate while the bush does its quiet work on the soul.

The Layers of Sashwa

What makes Sashwa unique is not just one thing; it’s the layers. From shared moments around the fire, to the surprise of finding an easel in the bush, to the quiet of watching stars from a bath on a hill. These details may not headline our story, but they weave into the fabric of what it means to retreat here.

And for those who’ve yet to visit, perhaps it’s these lesser-known corners that will make your time at Sashwa all the more memorable.
